I make this recipe at least once a week because my toddler will have a second and sometimes third helping of it every time I serve it to her. And I am okay with that because this dish is full of good protein, fiber and iron, so I feel good when I feed her this dish. It’s also a favorite of mine for all those reasons above, as well as because it’s delicious. It’s also incredibly quick to make, which makes it so easy to whip up for lunch or dinner in a pinch. The hummus makes the bite creamy and satisfying, and the ground beef adds texture and meaty flavor. There is nothing better! I love to serve it with pita chips, pita bread or oftentimes just a vegetable on the side.

If you’re having a hard time getting your little one to eat enough protein or iron, this recipe is for you. My toddler absolutely loves hummus; she loves it a lot more than she does meat! So I find that when putting the two together, she doesn’t mind the beef in the hummus. She just shovels everything in her mouth! This meal is also packed with such good protein that I know she will be feeling satiated and full. You can serve this to your little one 7 months+! This meal is easy to eat, and the flavors are pretty mild for a younger baby.
This is how I serve it to my 16-month-old toddler:

minutesIngredients
- Hummus
1 15 oz can great northern beans or cannellini
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon water
1 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Ground Beef
1/2 lb ground beef
1 teaspoon oregano
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 tablespoon tomato paste
2 tablespoons water
2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley for garnish (optional)
Directions
- In a medium sized saucepan over medium heat, brown your ground beef. While it’s browning, make sure you are breaking up any big pieces with your spatula.
- While your beef is browning, make your hummus. In a food processor or blender, combine the beans, olive oil, lemon juice, water, garlic, cumin, salt and pepper. Blend until smooth. If the hummus is thick, add more water until you have a smooth texture. Set aside!
- Once your beef is browned, drain the fat. Add in the tomato paste, water, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt and pepper. Let is come to a simmer, then turn down to low and let the beef soak up the tomato sauce. This should take 5 minutes.
- If you are serving out of one serving platter, scoop the hummus onto the platter, then drizzle some olive oil in the middle of the hummus, then sprinkle the ground beef over the top. If you are serving individual portions, you can scoop about 1/2 cup of hummus onto each plate, a small drizzle of olive oil, then top the hummus with a couple tablespoons of the ground beef. For littles, start with 1/4 cup of hummus, a touch of olive oil and a tablespoon of ground beef. Sprinkle fresh parsley on top if you would like!
- You can store the ground beef and hummus separately in airtight containers for up to 3 days. Enjoy!:)
