The First Applesauce

I made this applesauce when my toddler was starting solids. Now when I find some good apples I always like to make a batch! Fall and winter is the best time for that since apples are in season now. This applesauce is simple, with no added sugars, but added spices to bring out the natural sugars in the apples. It’s sweet, tart and full of beautiful fall flavors. I love to make a batch and keep it on hand to use as a side for meals.

For Littles

This is the first applesauce I fed my baby, and it’s been one of her favorite foods since. Applesauce is great for little ones’ digestion due to its fiber content. I always give her applesauce or juice if her digestion needs a boost. Apples are also high in vitamin C and D! Along with its many health benefits, apple sauce is easy for littles to eat. Also, the flavors of cinnamon and cardamom in this recipe are subtle, but will introduce some fall spices to your baby’s palette. You can serve this to your baby 6 months+!

How To

Peel and chop your apples. Add in the rest of the ingredients and simmer.

Cook down until the apples can break apart! Mash or blend! Enjoy warm or cold.

The First Applesauce

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs apples cored, peeled and chopped** (see notes)

  • 1/3 cup water

  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom

  • Pinch of salt

Directions

  • In a medium sized pot over medium heat, combine your apples, water, lemon juice, cinnamon, cardamom and salt. Mix together until all the apples are coated in the ingredients.
  • Stir often, making sure all the apples are touching the heat. After 10 minutes or once the apples are slightly soft, you can then cover the pot with the a lid.
  • Stir occasionally for 25 minutes, until all the apples can break apart. Using a potato masher or immersion blender, blend the apples until you get the consistency you want. I love both a chunkier applesauce as well as a smooth applesauce!
  • You can serve warm or put in an airtight container and put in the fridge so you can serve it cold. You can leave it in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze it for 3 months. Enjoy!:)

Notes

  • Any apples are perfect for this. I love using a combination of Fuji and Honeycrisp!
