These classic animal crackers remind me of the Barnum’s animal crackers I used to get as a kid. These crackers are sweet and chewy with a perfect crisp exterior. These nostalgic crackers are so easy and quick to whip up!

I love making these to keep in the pantry for a fun snack for my toddler and I to eat. Yes, you can of course buy them at the store; but there is something so satisfying about making them yourself. They’re not only healthier than the store bought, but using these animal crackers cutters I bought, I think they’re so much cuter than the ones from the store! The dough is made in a food processor, chilled in the fridge, and then rolled out on a lightly floured surface to make the animal shapes. You give them a quick bake and then they are ready to eat! They’re the perfect snack to take on the go and t have around the house. I hope you love these as much as my family and I do!

Ingredients
You will need All Purpose Flour – I have used whole wheat before in place of the all purpose, Rolled Oats– I love using the oats because it gives the cracker more texture and a sweeter flavor, Ground Cinnamon, Baking Soda, Salt, Unsalted Butter and Honey – you can use maple syrup instead.
These are the cracker cutters I use: Animal Cracker Cutters. I also think this Bench Scraper is key when attempting to lift the animal cracker dough from the lightly floured surface to the parchment paper. I have tried to lift the dough with my hands and I have broken the dough apart. The bench scraper makes it easy!
For Littles
These are such a fun snack to make for and with your little ones! My daughter loves these animal crackers. She loves to line them up and say the names of the animals before she eats them. I love making these for her because I know they’re better for her than the store bought. If you use honey, you can serve these to your littles 12 months + due to honey not being recommended for babies under 12 months of age. If you use maple syrup in place of the honey, you can serve to your littles 7 months +.

Classic Animal Crackers
Ingredients
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup oats
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup softened unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup
- 2 tablespoons water
Instructions
- In a food processor, combine all the ingredients. Pulse until a dough forms.
- Put the dough in plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 15-30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 375.
- Take out and roll out the dough in a couple of batches on a lightly floured surface. I like rolling the dough out in batches so that I can easily roll it to 1/4 inch thick without it being too big or long to roll out.
- Using the animal cracker cutters, cut out your animals and place on the baking sheet covered with parchment paper.
- Bake at 375 for 5-7 minutes, until just lightly browned and set. Let cool on the baking sheet for a couple minutes.
- Repeat batches until you have used up all the dough.
- Store in an airtight container for up to a week. Enjoy!:)
