This Max and Ruby birthday cake is a fun and delicious cake I made for my daughter’s 3rd birthday. It’s adorable to look at, nostalgic of the cakes on the show Max and Ruby, and is absolutely delicious!

Making birthday cakes for my little one is one of my favorite things to do, and this Max & Ruby cake was the perfect 3rd birthday cake for my daughter. It came out perfectly imperfect and nostalgic of the show. I split the cake into a Ruby half (pink frosting with white cake) and Max half (chocolate frosting with chocolate cake) and I love how it came out!

Below, in the cake ingredients and directions, I list store-bought ingredients, but feel free to use your favorite recipes instead (that’s what I did). You can choose depending on how much time and work you want to invest in the cake. I hope you love this recipe as much as my family and I did!

Ingredients

1 box vanilla cake mix OR your favorite vanilla cake recipe

1 box chocolate cake mix OR your favorite chocolate cake recipe

1 16 oz can strawberry frosting OR your favorite strawberry or vanilla frosting recipe – I used a homemade vanilla frosting recipe for this & added 1 drop of red food coloring to get the pink color for the frosting

1 16 oz can chocolate frosting OR your favorite chocolate frosting recipe

1 4.5 oz tube yellow decorating frosting OR your favorite vanilla frosting recipe – I used the same vanilla buttercream frosting I used to make for the pink frosting. I added 1 drop of yellow food coloring to 1/3 of the frosting to make it yellow

Gummy Worms

Raspberries

Star Sprinkles Star Sprinkles – these are the sprinkles I used for the cake

For Littles

I made this cake for my toddler’s 3rd birthday. Here are some pictures of her party – I made cupcakes for the actual party! All these party decorations I ordered on Etsy & Walmart

How To

Make your cakes and let cool. While they cool, make your frostings!

Build your cake. Cut each cake in half and stack bottom sides down. Put the cake together and shave off tops if one rose more than the other. Lift each top layer of cake and put a layer of frosting in between. Then frost the outside of the cake with the rest of the frosting

Decorate with gummy worms, yellow frosting and star sprinkles. Light candles and enjoy!:)

Ingredients

  • 1 box vanilla cake mix OR your favorite vanilla cake recipe
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix OR your favorite chocolate cake recipe
  • 1 can strawberry frosting OR your favorite strawberry or vanilla frosting (you can make the frosting pink by adding 1 drop of red food coloring to the frosting)
  • 1 can chocolate frosting OR your favorite chocolate frosting recipe
  • 1 4.5 oz tube yellow decorating frosting OR if you made vanilla buttercream, take 1/3 of it and add 1 drop of food coloring to it)

Cake Decorations

  • Gummy worms
  • Raspberries
  • Star Sprinkles

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven 350 and cover two 9-inch cake pans with parchment paper. Set aside
  • Either make your cake recipes or make the boxed cake mixes according to box directions. Pour the vanilla into one cake pan and the chocolate in the other (the cake mixes make double the amount of cake batter, so only pour in half of the batters into the cake pans.
  • Bake your cakes according to box instructions and set aside to cool completely. Once cooled, pop them out of the cake pans and set on a wire rack while you get your frostings ready
  • Either make your pink, yellow and chocolate frostings or set the store bought ones out in front of you so they’re ready to use as you assemble your cake
  • Cut both cakes in half. Stack the cut-in-half vanilla and chocolate cakes and stack them on top of each other and connect the two (see pictures above). Shave off the top if needed to make them even
  • Add one layer of pink frosting in between the vanilla cake layers and one layer of chocolate frosting in between the chocolate layers. Then using the rest of the frostings, frost the outside of the cake until even
  • Using the tube of yellow decorating frosting or your own vanilla frosting with yellow food coloring in a pastry bag, pipe out yellow circles around the pink side of the cake.
  • Decorate the chocolate side of the cake with gummy worms and raspberries and the pink side of the cake with star sprinkles
  • Stick in some candles and cut the cake! Serve! You can store in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Enjoy!:)
